Gushe Will Curl in Mall

May 28, 2008

There are all sorts of curling clubs in Canada. Big curling clubs with six or more sheets, and small curling clubs with only a couple. We've seen curling in hockey rinks and curling in flooded warehouses. But the World Curling Tour is trying something pretty neat in Russia—curling in a mall.

Canada's own Brad Gushue will head over to the Adamant Russian Masters which will take place in a shopping mall in St. Petersburgh. What else is unique about this event? It's going to be played smack dab in the middle of the summer. While most curlers are out enjoying the warm summer weather, Gushue (along with other greats like David Murdoch, Thomas Ulsrud, Andy Kapp, and Paal Trulsen) will be taking part in the July 25-27 demonstration event.

The tournament will be held mainly to help grow the sport of curling in Russia and, among the superstars I've already mentioned, will feature a few local Russian teams. Since this is only a demonstration event, no World Curling Tour points are going to be handed out to any teams. The players just get a unique opportunity for some great competition during the summer.

Murdoch spoke with Scottish Curler Magazine and shared his thoughts on this very unusual event.

"We are all looking forward to [it]," he told the magazine. "The ice could be interesting though, being in a shopping centre and it being the end of July."

And it will indeed be interesting. So stayed tuned to Curling Scoops this summer as we will be bringing you the greatest coverage of this unique event and all your other curling updates.
