Curling coach makes Sports Hall of Fame

May 12, 2008

One of curling's best surprises of the 2007-08 season was Krista McCarville's amazing run at the Players' Championship in April. The young skip from Ontario emerged from nowhere to come within a single shot of winning the whole championship. But behind every great team is a great coach, and what better coach can you have than your dad? That's certainly the case for McCarville's third, Tara George.

George's father, Tom Coulterman, will be inducted into the Sault Ste. Marie Sports Hall of Fame for his incredible accomplishments as a curling coach. Those accomplishments, which date back as far as 1974, include coacing N.O.S.S.A curling championship teams, coaching the silver medalist team at the 1992 Canadian Junior Championships, and coaching Team Ontario twice at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment is coaching the Canadian Junior Men's Curling Team at the World Junior Curling Championships an incredible twelve times! That span, from 1996 to 2008, earned Coulterman eight gold medals and two bronze medals.

Tom Coulterman has also served as the provincial course conductor for Curl Ontario for a remarkable three decades. Not to mention he regularly coaches at high performance training camps for junior curlers in Canada and even in Europe.

This is great recognition for the sports and a well earned honour for one of Canada's best coaches. The induction ceremony will take place in the Russ Ramsay Room of the Sault Ste. Marie Civic Center on June 5th.
