Mirjam Ott takes home bronze

March 29, 2008

It was a rematch of the 3 vs. 4 page playoff game as Japan and Switzerland squared off in the bronze medal game. Japan was really disappointed to be playing in this game, as they had team Canada up against the ropes in the semi-final. But Jennifer Jones battled back to steal away the win and send Japan to this bronze medal game against Mijam Ott of Switzerland.

When they met in the 3 vs. 4 playoff game, it was Japan, skipped by Moe Meguro, that came out on top. But the disappointing loss to Canada appeared to have rattled the young skip, and she dropped by her 80% performance earlier in the day to a surprising 54% in the bronze medal game. The slow start for Japan led to a shocking steal of three by Switzerland in the very first end. This really set the tone for the game. After Japan got a duce in the second, Switzerland continued with the offense and answered back with a duce of their own, followed by another big steal of two in the fourth.

Japan seemed to settle down after this, but with an 8-2 deficit after five end, it was Switzerland who cruised on to the win.

This was Japan's best ever finish at the World Women's Curling Championship, despite just barely missing the medals. For Switzerland, it's mixed feelings. Obviously they are happy to get the medal, but after finishing the round-robin tied with Canada and China, they felt they deserved to be in Sunday's final.
