Team Canada still can't solve ChinaMarch 28, 2008Team Canada lost a heart-breaker in the round-robin to China when Jennifer Jones' final stone of the game was heavy and sailed through the house, giving up a steal of two and let the game slip away. Friday night provided Canada a chance for redemption as they met Bingyu Wang of Team China again in the 1 vs. 2 playoff game. Early on in the game, it was all China. Though Canada held China to a single point in the first, China outplayed Canada after that. The Chinese team stole a point. In the second end, a horrible reenactment of the Jennifer Jones final shot in Canada's previous game against China. With China sitting two stones in the house, Jones had to draw to the four-foot to get her point. However, Jones' rock ran straight and crashed on a guard, giving up a steal of two. China continued to diminate the game into the fifth end break. They grabbed another two points in the fifth, capitalizing on a few bad misses by team Canada. The remarkable story at the fifth end break was the flawless 100% performance by Skip Bingyu Wang of Team China. The overall team China shooting percentage was a very impressive 92%. Canada's numbers weren't bad either, a team average of 86%, but it was the 73% by their Skip that was hurting them the most, espeically when she's paired up against Bingyu. It wasn't until the sixth end that Bingyu Wang missed a shot. And Canada jumped all over it, capitalizing on the error and scoring a duce. The almost three thousand Canadian fans that packed into the Greater Vernon Multiplex finally had something to cheer about. Though Canada started playing better in the second half, China also upped its game and beat Canada yet again. The final score was 7-5. This advances China into the gold medal match for the first time ever in curling and will guaruntee China its first ever medal at the World Championships. All that's left to determine is whether it will be a gold or a silver. Canada will now try to earn a third shot at the Chinese by winning the semi-final match on Saturday. Japan will also be playing in the semi-final due to their victory over Switzerland's Mirjam Ott in the 3 vs. 4 playoff game. More news |
