The hot-streak has ended for ChinaMarch 26, 2008After China's record-breaking start at this year's Ford World Women's Championships, Bingyu Wang has finally been handed her first loss. It would take an Olympic silver medalist to end the seven game winning streak that the Chinese team were riding. After taking down big names like Jennifer Jones of Canada and Debbie McCormick of the United States, it seemed that nobody would be able to handle this year's team from China. Then they faced Switzerland's Mirjam Ott, who won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Early on, the game looked like China was in full control. The Chinese held Ott, who had the hammer, to a single point in the first end. After taking a point of their own in the second, China scored another in the third. It was the second half of the game that shook things up. China seemed to have delivered a strong blow in the seventh end where they scored a duce. But Ott answered back loudly by scoring a whopping five points in the eighth end. This was disater for the Chinese team, who never recovered. Despite picking up another duce in the ninth end, China wasn't able to generate a steal in the tenth to tie it up. Switzerland cleanly ran China out of stones for the 9-7 victory. The loss drops China back into a tie with Canada's Jennifer Jones for first place, both with 8-1 records. However, should the round-robin finish with these same standings, China will be given first place since they defeated Canada in their round-robin game. Mirjam Ott and her Swiss team are still in it with a 7-1 record, nipping at the heals of both Canada and China. More news |
