China is for real

March 25, 2008

A match-up that would probably be ignored any other year was the most anticipated of the day. Canada and China squared off today in a game that would hand the winner sole position of first place. Both teams were deadlocked with 5-0 records and were the only undefeated teams left at this year's Ford Worlds.

China started off the game with the hammer, and Jennifer Jones and her Canadian team did a good job at forcing the Chinese to take a single point and give up the hammer. But China seemed to do just fine without the hammer, as they stole two points against the Canadians.

After trading singles in the third and fourth, Canada tied things up quickly by scoring three points in the fifth end. After the break, Canada showed that they too could steal points. They grabbed one more in the sixth end to take the lead for the first time in the game.

China scored two in the seventh, only to have Canada answer back with a duce of their own in the eigth. China then got the hammer back but were again held to a single point. So Canada would head home in the tenth end with a tied 7-7 game. This situation is usually a done-deal for Jennifer Jones, but to the shock of every person in the Greater Vernon Multiplex, China stole two points and defeated Team Canada for the first time.

The upset moves China into first place and they maintain their perfect record at 6-0. Canada suffers just their first loss, and drops into a tie with Switzerland with a 5-1 record. China will try to extend their winning streak to seven games against the United States. Canada will have a bye in draw ten before they take on the United States at 9:00 pm (EST).
