Canada and China still undefeated

March 24, 2008

Both Canada and China sit atop the leaderboard with perfect 5-0 records. For Canada, anything less would be disappointing to fans. Canada has long been considered a curling powerhouse, coming into each and every tournament, men's or women's, as a heavy favorite to win it. In Canada, there are more curling clubs than in the rest of the world combined. In fact, the Canadians are starting to leak into other teams. Team USA's skip, Debbie McCormick was actually born in Canada. Germany's alternate, Gelanie Robillard, is Canadian and actually played with members of this year's Team Canada at world junior events.

China, on the other hand, has been a great surprise. They've been handing out more upsets than Tim Allen's movie career. For a team that rarely makes an impact at world events, they've defeated some of the top teams at this year's event. On the first day, China destroyed Team Sweden 11-5, the first sign that this team was for real. Next they took down another tough opponent, Russia. They continued on by beating Scotland, then Denmark, and then last night they handed another loss to the Czech Republic. These five wins equals total round-robin victories earned by China at last year's world women's event and is the best start China has ever had at a world curling event.

Canada also has defeated some big name teams, including Olympian Mirjam Ott and former world champ Angelina Schoepp. Last night they squeezed past a very good Russia team by a score of 9-6.

Tuesday, the winning steak will end for one team. These two remarkable teams will go head-to-head in draw number nine at 11:30 EST.
