Big win makes it two in a row for Canada

March 23, 2008

After having a rest for this morning's draw, Jennifer Jones and her Canadian squad took to the ice against the Czech Republic on Easter evening. Jones won her first game on Saturday against Mirjam Ott of Switzerland. They Czechs are still looking for their first win.

The young Czech Republic team skipped by Katerina Urbanova got the jump on the Canadians, stealing a point in the first. It was key stone placement called by the impressive Czech skip that earned them the point despite all four Canadian players curling 100% in the opening end.

The second end saw the back of the house get very crowded with Canadian stones. In an attempt to cut down Jones' scoring area, Urbanova planned to draw in behind cover with her final stone. But nerves and inexperience got the better of the young skip, as she held on to her rock a split second too long resulting in a hog-line violation. This gave Jennifer Jones a light tap to score four, but she would have to settle for three points as her tap didn't hit quite enough of the Czech stone and rolled out. Canada kept it coming in the third, stealin a pair to jump up to a 5-1 lead.

The Czechs, who are playing in their first ever women's world championship, rallied with a duce of their own in the fourth end. Urbanova stayed calm and cool throughout the end, and after setting up nicely, she left herself a simple draw for the two points. However, any confidence earned by that well played end soon fell apart.

In the fifth end, Jennifer Jones played her trademark aggressive style and had the Czechs in a lot of trouble. Left with little more than a tough raise on her last shot, Urbanova couldn't hold off the Canadian offense. Canada picked up a game-breaking six points to close out the first half. At the fifth end break, Canada was in an idea position. They had an 11-3 lead and had two players curling 100% (Dawn Askin and Cathy Overton-Clapham).

That was enough for the Czech Republic. Once the fifth end break was over, they picked up their single point and called it a night. The final score was 11-4 after just six ends. This improved Canada to 2-0 to tie them with China and Denmark at the top of the leaderboard. The Czech Republic is still looking to get on a roll and drops to 0-2.
