China turning heads in B.C.

March 23, 2008

China was considered an underdog heading into this year's world championships. The team from China has historically been among the weaker teams at the world curling championships. After Finishing out of playoff contention last year, skip Bingyu Wang is starting to get the attention that her very skilled China team deserves.

On day one of this year's world championships in Vernon, B.C., China was the talk of the tournament. They delivered the biggest upset of the day, crushing the Swedish team with a score of 11-5. Sweden is always a heavy favorite in any curling competition. In women's curling, Sweden has the second most world titles of any nation with eight. The only nation with more is Canada. Despite this, Wang handed the young Stina Viktorsson of Sweden the convincing defeat.

Today, in draw 3 China will try to build on yesterday's big win. They're taking on Liudmila Privivkova of Russia, another one of this year's younger teams.

In the first end, Team China missed a few key shots which allowed Russia to put on the pressure. This forced Wang to take a single point and give up the hammer.

In the second end, the Russian team put on a clinic in taking advantage of opponents mistakes. With the Chinese skip curling a disappointing 44%, Privivkova capitalized and loaded up the house with Russian rocks. When the smoke cleared, Russia picked up a big four points to move ahead. The Russians kept it coming, and stole another in the third to make it 5-1.

With the game quickly getting out of hand, China started simplifying their game and it paid off for them in the fourth end. They made the game close by scoring three points.

Russia managed to hold on to that one point lead into the tenth end, where they had hammer. But China went hard on the offense and stole two points to grab their first lead of a game and take the win 8-7. This improves China to 2-0, and Russsia drops into a tie with Italy at 0-2.
