Canada opens with a win in VernonMarch 22, 2008Jennifer Jones started off her second world championship appearance with a win over Olympic silver medalist, Mirjam Ott from Switzerland. Jones earned her way here by defeating another Olympian, Shannon Kleibrink, in the Tournament of Hearts championship in February. After getting a bye in the first draw of the tournament, Jones had her first world championship game on Canadian ice. Jennifer Jones knew this game wouldn't be easy, as few games at the world championships are. "They're a great team," Jones said, referring to Mirjam Ott's Swiss team. The Canadians got off to a great start, picking up a duce right on the bat in the first end. After blanking the second, the Swiss were held to one point in the third. Canada took one in the fourth, and Switzerland answered back with another one to head into the fifth end break. After five ends, both teams had remarkable shooting percentages. Both leads, Dawn Askin of Canada and Janine Greiner of Switzerland, were shooting above 94%. And the two skips were also in the 90's, with Ott shooting 90% and Jones with an impressive 93%. Canada then had an opportunity to get another duce in the sixth end after Ott jammed her final stone. But Jones' takeout hit only a corner of the Swiss stone, rolling out the shooter and forcing Canada to settle for a single. Canada carried that two point lead into the tenth end, where Mirjam Ott was left with a difficult double take-out to force an eleventh end. Despite throwing the rock well, it rolled just a little too far, giving Canada a steal. Canada wins it 6-3. More news |
