Get set for the Grand Slam

June 19, 2008

The Grand Slam of Curling is arguably the most competitive series of curling events on the planet. It allows for match-ups that one could only dream of seeing at the Brier or Tournament of Hearts—Kevin Martin taking on Randy Ferbey, Shannon Kleibrink battling it out with Cheryl Bernard, or how about Glenn Howard vs. Wayne Middaugh? All great match-ups that are rarely seen on TV due to these competitors being from the same province. Today, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling released their schedule, so mark your calendars for some of the best curling on the planet.

The first Grand Slam of the season will be a women's event; The Trail Appliance Autumn Gold, held October 10th to the 13th. Next up is the Casino of Winnipeg, October 24th to the 27th. Heading into November, from the 14th to the 17th will be the Wayden Transportation Ladies Classic, and the Sobeys Slam (one of last year's favorite events) will be later that same month, November 27th to the 30th.

The Men's Grand Slam kicks off the 2008-09 season with The Masters of Curling, taking place November 12th to the 16th. Up next, we head over to Quebec City which will host The National from December 3-7. The third event will be special. It's the BDO Canadian Classic and will include the "Capital One Million Dollar Button", which Curling Scoops reported on last season. Originally, this special opportunity was going to take place during The Masters, but has been moved to the BDO Classic which will be later in the season, from January 21st to the 25th.

The Grand Slam will wrap up with the Players' Championship from April 14th to the 19th, featuring both Mens and Womens action. This will be the last chance for many teams to qualify for the Olympic trials, so expect some incredible curling that week.

It's going to be an exciting season, so bookmark Curling Scoops so you can stay up to date on every event all season long. Check out all the events we'll be covering during the 2008-09 curling season on our events page.
