Gushue Cleans Up Pool 'A'

July 26, 2008

Canada's representative at the St. Petersburg Curling Cup, Team Gushue, has wrapped up the round robin portion of the event with a perfect record. After two big wins of the local favorites, Gushue finished up the round robin with a win against 2008 world bronze medalist Thomas Ulsrud from Norway.

Ulsrud, one of the strongest teams in the world last year, got off to a rough first day at the event, dropping both game to the significantly weaker Russian teams. The Norwegians were looking to get things back on track today against Gushue. But they got off to a slow start as Gushue brought some strong offense in the first couple ends. After opening the game with a point in the first, Gushue stole a huge four points to take a 5-0 lead after just two ends.

Ulsrud finally got on the board, picking up a single point in the third. Despite picking up another couple points in the fifth and sixth end, there just wasn't enough time for Team Norway to chip away at Canada's lead, and Canada won 6-3.

The loss ends the tournament for Ulsrud, who finishes with a 0-3 record. Gushue improves to 3-0 and wins Pool 'A'. Gushue now advances to the semifinals where he will meet the other team from Norway, skipped by Pal Trulsen, who finished second place in Pool 'B'. The other semifinal game will be between Pool 'B' winner, David Murdoch, and the second place Pool 'A' team, Russia's Andrey Drozdov. The winner of each semifinal game will advance to Sunday's gold medal game.
