Trading Brooms for ClubsJuly 24, 2008With the hot summer sun keeping most curlers off the ice, some of the worlds greatest will trade in their brooms for golf clubs and change their shouting from "hurry hard" to "fore"! The Sandra Schmirler Foundation is hosting a charity event called the Sandra Schmirler Golf Classic. Some of the world's greatest curlers will be there, including Jennifer Jones, Mark Kennedy, and former Schmirler team-mate Joan McCusker. The tournament will be held Monday, July 28th, at the Thornhill Golf and Country Club in Ontario. The star-studded line up will include 2008 world champions Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham (of team Jones), Mark Kennedy (team Martin) and Ben Hebert (team Martin), 2007 world champion Glenn Howard, Olympic gold medalist Joan McCusker, and Olympic silver medalist Mike Harris. All of the profits from this tournament will be donated to support the work of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation which helps provide funding to Canadian neonatal care facilities. The target goal for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation this year is to purchase new equipment for neonatal care units in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Brandon and Regina. Co-chair for this charity event, George Cooke, said, "The Sandra Schmirler Golf Classic not only supports an important cause, but it also gives participants the chance to enjoy a great day with some of our country's finest athletes." The foundation, as many of you know, was established in memory of the legendary Sandra Schmirler, one of the greatest to ever play the game. Due to Sandra's love for family, the foundation decided to celebrate this by raising money for neonatal causes. Francine Poisson, the president of the Foundation, summed up the event nicely: "I know Sandra would be so proud."
