Holland Wins It

April 19, 2008

Fourteen teams have been eliminated from the women's competition at this year's Players' Championship, leaving just two; Krista McCarville from Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Amber Holland of Kronau, Saskatchewan. This is the first time either of these two teams have appeared in a grand slam. The winner takes home $25,000 and 40 CTRS points. with the loser taking $16,000 and 30 CTRS points.

Both McCarville's and Holland's teams were heading into today's final with 5-2 records. The last time these two teams met was the 2007 Casinos of Winnipeg classic, where McCarville came out on top with a 7-3 score.

In the first end, Krista McCarville missed a draw with her last rock in the first end, leaving Holland a shot for two. But Holland's draw came up short, so she'd have to settle for one.

McCarville scored a point in the second end, tieing the game at 1s. Holland got the lead back with another score of one in the third end, leading it 2-1 after three ends.

The fourth end proved to be the highest scoring end thus far. McCarville's third, Tara George, made a nice double with her first stone. This set up the end well for Team McCarville, who posted two points to jump ahead to a 3-2 lead.

With the hammer in the final end, Holland had a stone sitting at the front of the four-foot. But McCarville followed her down and placed two of her own stones in front of Holland's shot rock. For the next few rocks, McCarville guarded the pile, hoping for a miss from Holland's team. With Krista's first stone, she played a tap on her own two rocks, which tapped back the shot rock belonging to Holland. This gave McCarville's team shot stone.

With McCarville's final stone of the tournament, she played a perfect tap on her own rock, which was sitting in the eight foot on the center line, back perfetly on the button. She even left her shooter directly in front for a guard. This left Holland with a difficult double take-out. She made the shot and won the game 6-4 and claimed the title, giving her the first glam slam victory of her career.

Amber Holland, who was the fifteenth ranked team coming in to this tournament, came out on top from a field consisting of world champion teams such as Jennifer Jones and Kelly Scott, and Olympic medalist Shannon Kleibrink. Krista McCarville didn't do too badly either, being another team that surprised a lot of people with her success this week after coming into the tournament as the eleventh seed.
