Players' Championship kicks off in St. John's
April 16, 2008
It's opening day here at the TYLENOL Players' Championship here in St. John's, Newfoundland. Thirty two of the best mens and womens teams from across the country have gathered for the final leg of the Capital One Glam Slam of curling.
Draw one saw some great games, including a big upset. Shannon Kleibrink, seeded number two in the women's event, was taking on fifteenth ranked Amber Holland. Holland started the game with the hammer, picking up just a single in the first end. Kleibrink answered back with a single of her own in the second end, and then got away with a steal in the third to move up 2-1.
But it was Holland who brought the offense in the second half of the game, stealing back-to-back duces in the seventh and eighth to steal away the win, 7-3.
Other draws saw action from former world champion Kelly Scott, who earned a win over Julie Reddick, 7-4. Michelle Englot from Saskatchewan also started the tournament off with a win, her's coming against Heather Rankin by a score of 11-7.
The fourth game of draw one was between Cheryl Bernard and Krista McCarville. These two teams kept things pretty quiet, and it wasn't until the eighth and final end that a duce was finally scored. That duce went to McCarville, which put her ahead 5-3 for the upet victory.
