Jones is ready to compete

April 14, 2008

Jennifer Jones has been having the season of a lifetime, and it's not over yet. Most people would be happy being able to say they're the Scotties champions, let alone World Champions. But Jennifer Jones has her eye set on the triple crown, which she will capture if she can win the TYLENOL Players' Championship, starting April 16th.

"The TYLENOL Players' Championship is one of our favorite events," Jones said on Monday in a media conference. And there's no reason for her not to enjoy the event &mdash her team has never lost the Players' Championship since it became both a men's and women's event in 2006.

Only one other team has ever captured a curling triple-crown, and that was the legendary Russ Howard, who pulled it off in 2003. With a victory in St. John's, not only will Jennifer Jones join Russ Howard in that very exclusive group, but she will also become the first team, either men's or women's, to have ever won three consecutive Players' Championships.

Jones already has a bunch of accomplishments this season. The Jones rink won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and followed that up with a gold medal performance at the World Championships. With this tournament being the final event of the World Curling Tour, one might think that Jennifer Jones might just sit back, relax and not worry too much about how they play this week. But don't count on it.

"We are just such competitors," Jones said, when we asked her if it would be tough to get motivated for this event, knowing that their team had already secured a berth in the Olympic trials. "Once we get on the ice that competitive nature will come through."

Jones has had success in St. John's in the past. It was in the very same building that will host the Players' Championship, Mile One Centre, where Jennifer Jones won her first ever Scott Tournament of Hearts back in 2005. Her final shot to score four points and win the title is still fresh in her mind. "It was probably the biggest shot we've ever made," she said, reflecting on that big win. "It was the start of our team's era. It was the first year we played together and it got us going to where we are now."

Also in this event, will be Heather Strong, one of the home-town favorites. After her best finish ever at the Tournament of Hearts this year, Strong and her team can't wait to play in front of their friends and family. "It's an honour," Strong said. "[Newfoundlaners] are very loyal supporters to their home-town crowd... We're really excited to be playing at home."

The action gets underway on April 16th, and Curling Scoops will be on location bringing you more news than anywhere else.
