Winning streak continues for Martin

April 7, 2008

Draw eight was a big game for Canada, up against what may be one of the best teams in the world: Scotland's David Murdoch. Scotland has suffered from some inconsistent play, having lost a few games to teams that they probably should have been able to handle. But that doesn't make the former world champion any easier to beat, and Kevin Martin knew he'd have to be sharp if he wanted to keep his incredible seventeen-game winning streak alive.

Scotland looked good at the beginning of the game. Their shots were being made, and the strategy seemed more like that of the Murdoch team we're used to. After capitalizing on some misses by Team Canada, Murdoch stole a point in the first end. They got Martin in some trouble again in the second end. However, the remarkable shot making by John Morris and Kevin Martin allowed Canada to bail out and blank the end.

In the fourth and fifth end, the teams traded duces to head into the fifth end break tied up at 3-3.

The second half of the game saw Canada really wake up and start taking control. And again, it was Kevin Martin who dominated his Scottish counterpart. Canada stole a point in both the seventh and eighth end. Scotland tied it up with a duce in the ninth, but this allowed Martin to walk into the tenth end of a tied game with the hammer, a situation which is almost a done-deal.

Martin didn't crack under the pressure and finished off his 93% performance by getting his single point and winning the game 6-5. This improves Canada to 5-0 and they sit alone at the top of the leadboard. Including the perfect 13-0 record from the Tim Hortons Brier, this is Martin's eighteenth win in a row.
