Another lopsided win for Canada at worlds

April 6, 2008

Australia's Hugh Millikin became the latest victim of Kevin Martin and his Alberta squad. The skip Millikin, who throws third stones for Team Australia, headed into this game with a 1-1 record. But with the way this Canadian powerhouse has been playing, Australia would need the game of a lifetime to keep this one close.

The game opened well for the Canadians, scoring two points in the opening end with the hammer. After holding the Australians to a single in the second, Canada answered back with another two in the third.

The back-breaker came in the sixth end, where the Team Canada, who was curling well above 90%, scored three points to take a 7-2 lead. And Martin didn't let up there. In the eighth end, Martin set up the end perfectly, leaving Palangio (who throws Australia's skip stones) looking at three Canadian stones sitting around the button with his last shot. After admitting that there was no way to score, Palangio and Millikin decided to play a double take-out to cut Canada down to a steal of one. However, only a single take-out was made, so Canada gets a steal of two, padding their lead even further, 9-2.

Martin kept the eighth end clean, hitting and rolling out on his last. This allowed Australia a simple draw to anywhere in the paint to pick up a single. And that was all they wanted to play, as they shook hands after eighth ends. Final score, 9-2.

Canada improves to 3-0 and is tied with Germany atop the leaderboard. The other undefeated team heading into this draw, Czech Republic, received their first loss during this draw.
