Great start for Martin
April 5, 2008
Kevin Martin has been almost perfect this season. It seems the only mistake this team has made all year was showing up late for their practise yesterday. The Martin squad pulled off a flawless performance at this year's Tim Hortons Brier in Winnipeg, rattling off thirteen consecutive wins. They'll be looking to keep that winning streak alive at the World Men's Championship this week.
Canada opened their tournament against Johnny Frederiksen of Denmark. After seeing the way Canada started this game, you would never guess that they missed almost half of their practise yesterday. With the hammer, they picked up a big three points in the first end. Martin continued to pressure the Danes, and managed to steal a point in second.
Frederiksen finally got on the board in the third. But Denmark could only managed to pick up a single. However, they tried to claw their way back into the game with a steal in the fourth end.
Martin maintained control of this game, and after trading sinle points in the fifth and sixth, Martin had a simply throw-through to blank the seventh and head into the eighth with hammer, leading 5-3.
In the eighth end, Canada delt another huge blow by scoring another three points, Canada's second three-point end of the night. This gave Canada an 8-3 lead. They held on to their lead, winning the game by final score of 9-3.
Canada dominated this game right from the first end. Canada's team percentage was 90%, compared to Denmark's 64%. The big story was Marc Kennedy, Canada's second, who out-played his Danish counterpart, Bo Jensen, by a 94% to 53% margin.
The lead extends Martin's winning streak ot fourteen games. With what may have been their toughest match now overwith, Team Denmark now has ten games left to climb into a competitive position and make the playoffs.
