Canada late for practise
April 5, 2008
With the World Men's Championship set to start today, April 5, the teams gathered on Friday for a one-hour pre-tournament practise. As the teams headed onto the ice, something seemed a bit odd. Fans and media alike wanted to see the superstar Canadian team more than other competitor at this year's worlds, but the four Canadian players were no where to be found.
For twenty-two painfully long minutes, people sat wondering what was going on. Then finally Kevin Martin and his squad rushed into the arena.
"It's totally my fault", said Canadian coach Jim Waite, who appeared to have gotten the wrong time.
Though the other teams had significantly longer practice time, skip Kevin Martin wasn't concerned. His team simply opted not to throw any practise stones on the two outer sheets. Martin explained that he wanted to focus more on the middle two sheets of ice, saying that "That's where all the playoffs are. The end ones don't matter as much."
During Team Canada's twenty-two minute absence, everyone speculated that Canadian third, John Morris, may have had something to do with it. Morris often tends to attract negative attention. From breaking his finger in a bar fight prior to this year's Brier, to breaking brooms over he knee after missing big shots, the former World Junior champ tends to get himself into trouble often.
Both Martin and coach Jim Waite assured event organizers and the media that Morris was not at fault for causing the team to be late.
Canada will open up their World Championship run, ready or not, in Draw two against Denmark.
