Jones attempting to make history in St. John's

April 4, 2008

Jennifer Jones has a chance to make history this month in St. John's, Newfoundland, at the TYLENOL® Players' Championship. The Jones team &mdash consisting of Cathy Overton-Clapham, Jill Officer, and Dawn Askin &mdash will look to become the first ever women's team, and second team overall, to capture a triple crown of curling. This honour goes to any team that wins the Brier/Tournament of Hearts, the World Championship, and the Players' Champion in the same season.

To date, only Russ Howard's 1993 has managed to accomplish this. Howard won the 1993 Brier with his brother, Glenn, as Team Ontario over Brittish Columbia's Rick Folk. Howard then went on to win a world title in Geneva, Switzerland later that year.

Kelly Scott almost joined Russ Howard in the Triple Crown Club, after winning the Scoties and the Worlds in 2007, she was defeated by none other than Jennifer Jones in the finals of the 2007 Players' Championship.

In fact, no women's team besides Jennifer Jones' has ever won the Players' Championship. The event, which started in 1993, was only a men's event until 2006 when it switched to a joint men's and women's tournament. Jennifer Jones won the championship that first year, and defended her title last year in 2007.

Fresh off her gold medal performance at the Ford World's in Vernon, B.C., Jennifer Jones will take to the ice at Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland, to defend her Players' Championship title and complete the triple crown. Not to mention the $100 000 up for grabs.
