John Morris, the third for Kevin Martin, has walked away from the team who helped him win an Olympic gold medal.
Morris announced on Wednesday that he’ll be resigning his spot on the Martin squad. This move was surprising in the face of the upcoming Olympic trials in the spring.
After a shockingly poor performance at the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier, it is being speculated that Morris may feel that the team has reached its peak and is looking to start something fresh.
Morris said publicly, “Myself and Kevin were no longer thriving in our back-end role.”
Kevin Martin has confirmed the move. He also assured us that the other two members of his team, Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert, will stay with the team through the 2014 season.
There has been no mention yet of what John Morris will do next. It is likely he will continue to curl competitively, but no indication has been given as to whether he will skip a new team or join an existing one. Either move will be difficult right away, as most competitive teams are unwilling to make a lineup change to close to the Olympic trials.
