Kevin Martin’s disasterous start to the 2013 Time Hortons Brier got even worse on Monday afternoon. The Alberta team ran into a red-hot Brad Jacobs and was flattened 8-1. The loss sends Martin to a 1-3 record, while preserving Norther Ontario’s perfect 4-0 record.
After losing their first two games, Alberta was looking like they might be turning things around after winning their first game against British Columbia on Sunday night. They were hoping to keep that momentum going into Monday. Northern Ontario, however, had different plans.
Jacobs started the game very strongly, posting a big three points in the first end. They followed that up with a steal in the second end, taking an early 4-0 lead in the game.
With the hammer, Martin could only manage to generate a single point, putting a small dent in the Norther Ontario lead. But Jacobs pounded Martin again in the fifth end, scoring another three points to soar ahead 7-1.
With such a commanding lead, it was game over. Martin suffered through another two ends before giving up a steal and electing to throw in the towel. Jacbos and Team Norther Ontario take the huge win 8-1, and improve their record to 4-0.
Kevin Martin puts his playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. The loss drops him down to a 1-3 record. With so many teams ahead of them, Team Alberta is going to need a clean run from here on in if they’re going to have any hope of winning this year’s Brier.
