Team Alberta got off to a terrible start at this year’s Tim Hortons Brier. But with an important win tonight over Jamie Koe‘s Northwest Territories team, Kevin Martin still has some signs of life. At four losses, Martin knew that one more poor game would eliminate any chance of a playoff appearance.
It was a frustrating start to the game for the boys in blue and yellow. After the Northwest Territories team stole points in the first two ends, it was looking like this would be another disappointing game for the home-crowd Alberta fans. But Martin turned things around quickly, nailing his last stone of the third end, grabbing a massive four points.
Martin would follow up that big end with a steal of one more, extending his team’s lead to a comfortable margin.
The Old Bear kept the momentum going, and sailed to a smooth 8-3 victory, much to the relief of the Edmonton crowd. But Alberta still has some of his toughest games yet to come. Their final two games will be against Ontario and Newfoundland, the two leading teams thus far in the tournament. With a 3-4 record, Alberta may still be able to qualify for a tie-breaker game to earn a playoff berth. One more loss, however, and they are done.
